American artist Perci Chester’s most recent stainless steel sculptures are energetic compositions of twisting arabesque forms that seem barely anchored to the ground. Painted with vividly hued automotive enamels, the slightly kinetic sculptures express a dynamic, joie de vivre. Stylistically Chester’s work is abstract but rooted in the human figure and it explores ideas of tension, motion and balance.

Created variously from metal, glass, wood, found objects and industrial artifacts, her sculpture ranges in scale from intimate pedestal pieces to large public art installations. The work evokes her sense of humor, one that is rooted less in irony and more in complexities of memory and the human experience.
